Hello and Welcome! My name is Mr. John Armstrong. I am your child’s Mathematics Teacher for Grade 7 at KLA. I bring an immense wealth of cultural, academic and educational experience to KLA. I have been a teacher of Mathematics for over thirteen years in China and Thailand, and have been with KLA for four years. I have taught young adults to be interested and curious about math from 3rd Grade to 12th Grade. I have also taught Economics and Into to Art courses. I received an undergraduate degree in Economics from UC San Diego, a Master in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, a California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Math and earning a postgraduate Master in Education from National University. My interests are in traveling around the world learning about new cultures, languages and food (I speak Thai, Indonesian, some Chinese and Spanish). I love teaching students the universal language of Math and its applications in science and life.

Syllabus for Mr. Armstrong’s 7th grade Math class 2022-2023

Welcome to Mr. Armstrong’s Math Class! 

This course is designed so students can work in groups with their peers to solve applications based problems modeled after real-life situations and to foster curiosity and appreciation of mathematics to prepare them for high school and beyond. To be successful in this course students are encouraged to challenge themselves and persevere with all of their classwork to strengthen their math ability in addition to working closely with their peers to develop career habits, social communication and a team building mindset. 

College Preparatory Mathematics

This will prepare students to be effective at social collaboration and provide them with skills in mathematics to succeed in college, career and life.

Tutoring

To help students with all subjects including Mathematics tutoring is offered after school by appointment only. Send a short email request to [email protected]. In tutoring, students will have the opportunity to improve their grade, develop effective study habits and make up for incomplete work. 

Assignments

Students are given classwork and time to complete it. If students do not complete it in class they can turn it in when they finish, the sooner the better. Assignments will not be accepted after the six-week grading period, so do not wait until the last week to do any missing or late assignments. All assignments need to  be written in pencil on lined paper, showing questions, all work steps and presented as neatly as possible.

A  90-100%, B  80-89%, C  70-79%, D  60-69%, F  59% and below

Grade components

Assessments 40%

Classwork 50%

Intervention Wednesday 10%

Total:         100%

 

Citizenship Grade 

Students also receive a citizenship grade which reflects a students behavior and/or participation in class including group or individual progress. 

Citizenship Grade:

10 - 9 points E - Excellent

8 - 7 points G - Good

6 - 5 points S - Satisfactory

4 - 3 points N - Needs improvement

2 - 1 points U - Unsatisfactory

 

Classroom Rules/Expectations

Follow the KLA Student Handbook for school and classroom rules. All rules and learning expectations are designed to provide a safe learning environment for all students, and classroom procedures to ensure all students are learning to the best of their ability. Please reference the KLA student handbook for all of the 14 KLA  rules. It is essential that all students follow classroom rules. 

 Accountability Procedure:

When students do not follow the school or classroom rules and expectations the following steps are taken: 

  1. First time students will be given a warning. The warning can be verbal or non verbal.
  2. Second time students will be asked to fill out a TSMP in the classroom. This allows the teacher and student to meet and discuss what is going on and what may need to change.
  3. Third time students may be required to visit the Justice Room, a phone call to notify parents, a mediation, a behavioral intervention plan and/or after school detention.

Review the KLA Student Handbook for school rules which students studied and engaged with during the first week of class activities.
